What is the Full Form of NEET?
NEET stands for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. NEET has been a major game-changer in the Indian education system as it has made it easier for students to get admission into top medical colleges without having to appear for multiple entrance exams. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts this annual exam to select students for admission into undergraduate medical and dental courses in India. Thus, the NEET-UG is a single entrance exam for more than 66,000 BDS programmes across India. After the NMC Act 2019 was enacted by the government in September 2019, it made the NEET exam the only entrance exam required for students to gain admission to medical colleges. Exams in this category include the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).

History of the NEET Exam
Before the nationwide implementation of NEET, state-wise entrance exams and college-wise entrance exams for prestigious medical colleges such as AIIMS, JIPMER, IMS-BHU, KMC Manipal & Mangalore, and CMC Vellore were held.
After the Medical Council of India announced that the NEET-UG exam would be held in 2012, several states, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, strongly opposed the change. These states claimed that there was a significant gap between the MCI's proposed syllabus and their state curricula. NEET 2016 was held in English and Hindi, but at the beginning of 2017, it was announced that students would be able to take the exam in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, and Gujarati. Odia and Kannada have been added to the list of Indian languages students can take in addition to English.
Initially, the Supreme Court of India invalidated the NEET for all medical and dental colleges on July 18, 2013. It barred the Medical Council of India from holding a unified examination. Later on, the Indian government announced the test to be administered on May 5, 2013, and was open to applicants for undergraduate and graduate medical programmes. Again on July 18, 2013, after hearing 115 sessions, SC cancelled the exam and ruled that the MCI could not interfere with college admissions.
In 2013, the Central Board of Secondary Education published the All India Merit List and NEET-UG results. The merit and waiting lists were created following the orders of the DGHS, MCI, DCI, and the Supreme Court of India. The 2013 results were released on June 5th, 2013.
A five-judge Constitution bench recalled the previous ruling and reinstated NEET on April 11, 2016. The Central Government and the Medical Council of India will conduct the common entrance exam until the court rules on its legality again.
